I uploaded this image because I knew it would start some controversy. This is not necessarily my opinion, but keep reading and I'm sure you will understand why I put this picture up here.
Today in class, I got in a pretty heated debate about illegal immigration with a few of my classmates. This topic is very interesting to me and seems to get me riled up. But most people probably don't know why, so let me try to explain.
First off, I do realize this country was founded by immigrants. I understand that at one time my ancestors were immigrants. But times have changed. As our population grows at a rediculous rate, we must be more selective on who we let in to the U.S.
But why? Well for one, as more illegal immigrants come into the country, issues arrise with taxes, health care, and schooling.
Many illegal immigrants don't pay taxes, but still send their children to public schools and take them to hospitals for treatment.
If you don't believe that the illegal immigrants are costing the United States money, then you should CHECK OUT THIS WEB SITE.
The numbers are staggering. Costs of social security for illegal immigrants since 1996 are in the hundreds of billions of dollars. Costs of illegals K-12th grade are nearly 15 billion dollars.
And the numbers are on the rise.
I also had an issue with the fact that many illegals don't learn english when they come here. Countries are unified when they have a single, common language. Despite not having a national language, it is obvious that english is the language of the United States.
If immigrants want to come to the U.S., they need to have at least some understanding of english, or take classes to learn it. I so sick and tired of people saying "it's part of their culture and they don't want to lose that." Well, if they don't want to lose it, then they should stay in their own country, or practice their religion, but still learn english.
A society is more productive and works better when everyone in it is on the same page and speaks the same language, it's just common sense.
Let the debates begin
ReplyDeleteI commented on another blog about this same topic and she was saying that we should show compassion to illegal immigrants which I didn’t agree with. Like I said on her post, an illegal immigrant in our country is wrong and I don’t feel I need to show them compassion. It is unfair to people who work hard to get citizenship in this country, illegal immigrants cheat the system and that’s wrong. Also I like your comments about English in this country. I understand people want to hold on to their culture and language and that’s fine, but if that is the case they need to become bilingual. America has no official language, okay. I wonder how many people in our class speak another language fluently. One? maybe two? If we have no official language shouldn’t we all be able to speak multiple languages? I know we are required to take another language in high school and college but in my 5 years of taking class to learn Spanish you want to know how much I retained... muy pequeno! Even though we don’t not have an official language in America, it is pretty well understood that English is the first choice and will be the first choice for the rest of our lives and you cannot deny that, and if you do, you’re playing yourself.
ReplyDeleteIt is perfectly fair to say that if a person moves here and doesn’t know English then they should make an effort to try and learn it. We may not have a national language, but it’s English. I we don’t have a national language then why does a person have to take a langue test to show that they have a command of the language? Because it’s what we speak here. If I were to move somewhere in Mexico or Spain I would absolutely be expected to learn the language. If I move to France I would be expected to speak French. They’re even rude to tourists who try to speak French and fail. It’s not asking to much to ask them to learn our language. We’re not asking them to assimilate or forget their culture, it’s not like they forget their native language, we’re just asking them to learn ours in addition to theirs. I know Spanish and I live in American. Why can’t they learn it also?
